Abstract:

Nineteen typescript letters, signed by Adams, on his personal letterhead stationery writing in his capacity as a Director and Board member of the Sierra Club. Most are addressed to Philip S. Berry in his capacity as Secretary and then President of the Sierra Club. Some are addressed to other Sierra Club officials, the Board of Directors, newspapers, and newsletters. Most of the letters contain sharp criticism of David Brower as Executive Director of the Sierra Club, including questionable financial transactions and political maneuvering. In one letter to the Treasurer of the Sierra Club, William Siri, Adams demands that Brower account for all his campaign expenditures or Adams will ask the Attorney General to investigate. Also includes a color photocopy of a Sierra Club pamphlet reproducing a John Muir letter to Charles Warren Stoddard, Feb. 20, 1872.
